In two minutes, an average of three people have suffered a stroke. Just two minutes. Your dad is now part of that statistic. He had a stroke and his need for support is immense. Consult a home care agency for their post surgery care services. What do you do first?
Get His Home Set
Ask a home care agency for advice on what your dad needs most. If he needs a wheelchair, is his home set up for one? Are doors wide enough? Is his home on one level or multiple levels? Can he get into his home, or does his house have front steps?
If he doesn’t have a shower seat, he needs one. Make sure it has rubberized feet with suction cups to keep it from slipping. Any decorative rugs need to be removed from the home. Cords and cables need to be tucked away. Finally, put grab bars in the bathroom if they’re not already installed.
Talk to His Doctors
His doctors will have the best advice on what care your dad needs once he’s home. He may never fully regain full use of his body. He may always need a wheelchair or walker. It’s important to understand what’s going to happen.
As you learn more about your dad’s health, you can make arrangements for post surgery care aides. He can have a caregiver available during the day for meals and housekeeping. If he has therapy sessions, his caregiver can get him to those appointments on time or let a home health care therapist into the house.
His evening caregiver can help him with dinner, a bath, and bedtime. He may not want to be alone while he goes to sleep. His caregiver could read him a few chapters from a book or watch a movie with him.
His overnight caregiver can do the laundry and prep meals while he sleeps. He has a caregiver ready to help if he needs help going to the bathroom in the middle of the night or has medications to take and needs water.
Talk to the Family About Post Surgery Care Aides
Gather your family for a discussion about your dad’s care plan. You might find that your brother wants to take your dad to upcoming appointments. That reduces some of the tasks on your daily to-do list. Your sister wants to do your dad’s laundry. There’s another.
As you narrow down the list, you’ll be able to focus on making the most of a caregiver’s time. Instead of overloading a caregiver, you ensure the caregiver has time to engage your dad in fun activities like games, walks outside, or a relaxed lunch in the sun.
Arrange post surgery care services as soon as you can. Ideally, you want to have that support team in place for his return home. Ask a specialist about the prices and services available from our local home care agency.
